Most useless Substack thing so far is chat. Everyone created a thread the first week, no bites (why wouldn't we just chat in the comments like usual?) and it sits there, popping up a little alert dot to trick me into checking on the ghost town. I wish platforms would stick to what they're good at instead of trying to multiclass all other platforms. We don't want a town square so much as a sequence of special clubs (or at least I do).

The entire arc of Substack chat feels like a warning fable that old developers tell young developers in rhyme. Truly a solution begging for a problem.

Yes! I miss the little car comfort of readers and writers hanging out in comments. I also sense that restacks have replaced "shares" and "cross posts" and are reaching far fewer new readers because they only reach other Substack writers. 🤦🏼‍♀️ So much fixing of unbroken stuff going on.

I suppose it’s a natural product of charging teams with finding the *brilliant secret we’ve missed all along*. If there’s no golden goose in sight, your job becomes painting pigeons.

It’s starting to feel like some kind of internal bet. A fully functional in-house Twitter presumably takes a minute or two more to get going.

I'm good for one clever comment per week -- maybe -- and at your recent prolific rate I'm out of gas. That said, I'm going to try to rope in some Princetonites to sign up for Extra Evil using the referral program. It's not that I haven't tried, mind you. But as you know far better than I, getting Princetonites to follow directions only works if they're kowtowing to fascists online.
